For the second day of a bloggy Oktoberfest, why not go pumpkin picking? For those of you with children, this is a fun way to get outside, enjoy the fall weather, and let your little pumpkin pickers shine by selecting their very own pumpkins. Plus, the possibilities are endless! You can carve a pumpkin, paint a pumpkin, bake pumpkin seeds, bake pumpkin pie, eat pumpkin seeds and pumpkin pie, and carve a jack-o-lantern.
Last week I learned about a pumpkin grower named Steve Connelly who may beat the Guinness Book of World Records for the world’s largest pumpkin. Weighing in at a possible 1900 lbs., Connelly’s pumpkin has been growing since the year 2000! To see an interview with Connelly and take a peak at his pumpkin, head on over here. And to learn more about the contest he is participating in, go here.
What aspirations do you have your pumpkin(s) this year?

Gypsy, I am so happy you are “back”! You know, it never occurred to me that the rest of the world doesn’t enjoy pumpkins as much as we do in the U.S. I’m happy to hear that you enjoy pumpkin pie though!
Abbie, I would love to learn more about properly preserving pumpkin seeds for planting. I would love to grow our own pumpkins in the coming year. If you try to to make your own Christmas ornaments, I would love to see a post on it because that sounds like a craft that I would try.
Thanks so much for your welcome and your concern when I ‘disappeared’! Pumpkins and Thanksgiving are something I do envy Americans … it sounds so much fun! Mum and I sometimes do pumpkin pie and a big roast chicken dinner (its pretty impossible to get turkeys here outside of Christmas) – its lovely fun!
I already baked and froze all of the pumpkins we grew this year, so I’ll have plenty in my freezer for the winter. I saved the seeds to plant next year, too. I’ve got a few pumpkins from my family’s farm for decoration outside, but instead of painting or carving them, I like them just the way they are. That way, the’ll be pretty decorations until Thanksgiving. I also really like the different gourds available, and they’re great for drying and painting. My mother in law has lots of different Christmas tree ornaments made from dried gourds and they’re so pretty. I think I may try to make some this year!
